Description

(x)Banco Nacional Ultramarino, Portuguese India,1 Rupia, 1st January 1924, serial number 360228, without "Decreto" overprint,A magnificent design showcasing the artistic flair of Thomas De La Rue, this note presents one of the most striking compositions of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino series. The front combines maritime and imperial symbolism, a steamship at sea, columns crowned with elephants, a roaring tiger, and the Portuguese coat of arms. All rendered with exceptional depth and balance. The reverse features Portuguese text and a vivid scene of soldiers outside the Lion Gate to the Jagannath (Krishna) Temple at Puri, one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites, famed for its monumental gateways guarded by stone lions. The presence of this imagery recalls the cultural dialogue between Portugal and India during the colonial era. The note also bears inscriptions in Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Portuguese, and Urdu, a deliberate reflection of Goa’s linguistic and cultural diversity under Portuguese administration.Printed without security thread or watermark, this “without Decreto” variety belongs to the earliest issue and is appreciably scarcer.(Pick 23),in PMG holder 55 About Uncirculated, only 2 notes in higher grades on PMG censusSubject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
