Description

(x)Government of India,*TOP POP* specimen 1 Rupee, ND (1917), serial number B/24 000010,This 1917 1 Rupee specimen marks a significant milestone in Indian currency history as the first banknote to feature the portrait of a reigning monarch. This major design shift set a precedent that would be followed by nearly all subsequent Indian banknotes. The king depicted was King George V, demonstrating the authority of the British Crown during a period of significant economic and social change in India. Before the introduction of this note, Indian currency included banknotes primarily of higher denominations alongside a wide circulation of coins for lower values. The 1 Rupee note was issued to replace many of these coins in daily transactions, a change largely driven by limited coin production caused by metal shortages in the First World War.The reverse of the note is especially notable for its eight denomination panels, each inscribed in a different language. This multilingual feature highlights the vast cultural and linguistic diversity of India at the time.As a specimen, this particular note was produced for official use by printers and banks and was never circulated, making it much rarer than issued notes from the same series. Its rarity and historical significance make it a highly sought-after piece for collectors.(Pick 1gs, Jhun&Rez 14.20),in PMG holder 63 EPQ Choice Uncirculated, tied for finest graded on PMG CensusSubject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
