Government of India, proof 5 Rupees, Kurrache / Bombay, 20th January 1871, this rare proof 5 Rupee note belongs to the Government of India’s “Green Issues”, which were produced from 1866 until 1927. These notes were designed to replace the preceding issues whose paper was not well-suited to the Indian environment and were also easily counterfeited. The new Green Issues had stronger paper better able to fare the tropical weather and new watermarks which added protection against counterfeiting. Issued notes of this type are black on a green underprint, but this proof is devoid of colour and neither does it include the denomination in green in the background. Like the issued notes, it includes four language panels. The issuing bank branch’s city listed is on this particular note as “Kurrachee or Bombay”. “Kurrachee or Bombay” does not appear on any known issued 5 Rupees notes and is not listed as an issuing city in Pick or other catalogues. A proof form of the 5 Rupees Green Issue is also extremely rare (Pick A2p, Jhun&Rez 2A.1.1),in PMG holder 58 Choice About Uncirculated, note unaffected by issues in selvage, pinholes, ex Nirav Shah's collection
