Government of India,5 Rupees, Madras, 9th November 1918, serial number BD/60 760718, this 5 Rupee is part of the Government of India’s “Red Issues”, which were produced from 1908 until 1918. The “Red” notes replaced the preceding “Green” notes and were intended to be a universalised version of the latter, rather than just being payable at the office of issue they were instead payable at any office. They are distinguished from the previous run of “Green” notes with their red underprint. This note is black on a red underprint with the denomination in the background, 3 serial numbers, and 8 language panels. The numerous language panels reflect India’s cultural diversity. The city of issue has been replaced with a one letter code, in this case “M” for Madras. The note is dated 9th November 1918 and bares the signature of M.M.S.
