PMG Very Fine 30.A rarity surely on the wish list of even the most advanced collectors of both Middle Eastern and Indian paper money, this is a wholesome circulated example of the highest denomination of the 1959 (but undated) Gulf Rupee series. Issued only in May of that year to pilgrims participating in the annual Haj, this was by far the highest denomination (ten times the next highest, the 10 Rupees) and has become an iconic type and one of the great world paper money rarities. The series was printed with the same basic design as the notes in circulation in India at the time, but with different prefixes, different colors and with the word "HAJ" added to the plate. The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, requiring Muslims to undertake a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime if financially and physically able. It occurs annually during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and involves a series of religious rites performed over several days. The Hajj serves as a profound act of worship, spiritual renewal, and a demonstration of unity among Muslims from diverse backgrounds worldwide. In 1959, approximately 200,000 to 250,000 pilgrims participated in the Hajj. To regulate the currency during this time, several nations have issued specific currency for use during the pilgrimage. The most famous of these is this series of Persian Gulf Rupees.This example is a nice mid-grade level of a type that seldom appears at public auction in any grade. We have sold less than a handful examples of this historical issue in the past, including two pieces that broke the $50,000 barrier. While we do not expect this example to reach that level, it is still a more than acceptable example. Typical staple holes and spindle holes are seen, but they are not distracting, and otherwise the note is free from any negative comments. The color is fresh and the paper quality is strong. A monumental offering that will be one of those notes that will leave the underbidder with regret for not bidding just a bit more once the gavel strikes on this lot.
