While individual specimens of this series are sometimes encountered, the offering of a complete collection in a single auction is highly unusual, and almost unprecedented. In the 1920s, Portuguese India, which included Goa, Daman, and Diu, underwent modest economic development driven by its position as a small but strategic colonial outpost. The government invested in improving Mormugão port to handle greater volumes of maritime trade, which was central to the territory's economic life. Exports of coconuts, cashews, and rice connected the colony to markets in British India and East Africa, sustaining its role as a regional trade link.
