Description
INDIA. Government of Hyderabad. 100 Rupees Sicca Osmania, 1920-28. P-S266ax. Fine. This note was salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Egypt, which sank on May 20th, 1922 after a collision with S.S. Seine. The Egypt carried a valuable cargo of gold and silver, so salvage efforts were immediately underway to recover her treasure. The wreck was not located until 1930, and she lay in 400-500 feet of water, making salvage operations difficult due to the technology at the time. Roughly 98% of the contents of the strong room were recovered by 1935. This note was recovered in 1932 by the Italian salvage vessel Artiglio. A purple stamp is on the left side explaining the notes history. Sea damage, staining and edge wear.Estimate: $500 - $1,000.
