Description Desirable Queen Victoria Portrait Type India Government of India, Bombay 10 Rupees 7.6.1862 Pick A1 Jhunjhunwalla-Razack 2.1.1-4 PMG Very Fine 20 . A seldom seen 19th century type, this is example is remarkable in this visually pleasing grade. Interestingly, British India uniface type were printed by the Bank of England until 1922. These 1860s-era notes are remarkably similar to English "White" notes that were printed until 1956. Notice the black circles surrounding "10 Rupees." This attribute is identical to that used on Bank of England notes. Apparently, this portrait series was easily counterfeited, and wore out quickly, leading to a new issue beginning in 1866, featuring stronger paper and a more complex watermark. The short lifespan of the Queen Victoria series makes extant examples very scarce today. Bombay city-of-issue is both typed and stamped on the front of this example. Crossfolds and a toned panel are seen on this otherwise excellent example. A necessary repair to a split along a vertical fold will preserve this treasure for generations to come. We have not offered this historically important type since 2005. At the time of cataloging, there are only two examples graded in the PMG Population Report , both grading Very Fine 20.
