Description
Bank of Bengal, Rupees 10, Type 10, Calcutta, hand signed cut at bottom, dated 31 August 1857. Serial number placed on top right and left corners in English and in Bengali on the reverse. Denomination written in Bengali, Persian and Devanagari scripts on the reverse (J&R 1A.3.10.1). Then newly designed note depicts ‘Britannia’ in the centre, accompanied by personified Commerce, Trade and Agriculture. Constituent Provinces of the Bengal Presidency identified by a Rhinoceros (for Assam), boat on river Hooghly (for Bengal), tomb of Sher Shah Suri (for Bihar) and Elephant (for the remaining provinces), all in the background. Fine, cut and rejoined in the centre, Rare.
