Bank of Madras, Rupees 20, hand written date 24 July 1849, Serial number 13215 placed on top right and left corners. Bank of Madras written in semi-circle above vignette of Equestrian statue of Sir Thomas Munroe, Governor of Madras. Denominations in numerals on four corners Arabic, English, Tamil and Telugu. Bank of Madras and denomination on reverse (J&R 1C.3.1.3). Large Red stamp “PAID 18 APRIL. 1873” & “CANCELLED” stamps across. These notes were known to exist only as Specimen Proofs on card. A handful of issued notes have recently turned up. Very Fine+, Uncut hence Extremely Rare. One of the finest specimen in the denomination to have appeared.
