Description

Finest Known for VarietyINDIA. Government of India. 100 Rupees, ND (1917-30). P-10i2. Jhun&Rez 3.10.2C. PMG About Uncirculated 55.Calcutta. J.B. Taylor signature. An impressive offering and a highlight for whatever collection it next enters. While this type is available with some regularity in circulated grades, at the About Uncirculated level, seen here, it is incredibly difficult to find. For all the different varieties, including the various circles (the term for the offices of issue found on these notes), there are only a handful of About Uncirculated notes graded, and they tend to be in strong hands, making opportunities to acquire this type at this grade level infrequent at best. The present piece is the finest example for the Calcutta circle with J.B. Taylor signature. This type's scarcity may be surprising given the fact that it was issued for more than a decade (1917 to 1930). Still, its buying power assured that few people could afford to put away one of these, not helped by the fact that there were very few paper money collectors in India at the time. Such notes were not easily available in Europe (unlike stamps, which were actively traded). This type comes with three different signature varieties and numerous different circles of issue, including Bombay, Karachi, Lahore, Madras, and Rangoon, among others. Perhaps surprisingly, the 100 Rupees is a bit more available than the 50 Rupees, but it remains a deceptively difficult type, especially in higher grades. An important opportunity for the Indian specialist.Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
