Bank of Madras, 100 Rupees, Madras, serial no. 15335. J&R 1C.3.2.6, Pick S153, dated to the 1859-61 period on the holder. Graded PMG Fine 12 NET (cert 6042614-006), comments 'Stamp Cancelled' and 'Repaired, Reattached at Center'. Printed by Perkins, Bacon & Petch, London (PB&P). From the Munro plate: the equestrian statue of Sir Thomas Munro, Governor of Madras 1820-1827, at centre beneath a semi-circular BANK OF MADRAS, the bank's name repeated in English, Persian, Telugu and Tamil, the denomination in the four corner medallions and in the vernacular scripts along the foot, and the engraved promise to pay the Bearer on Demand value received; printed by Perkins, Bacon & Petch, London, with ONE HUNDRED in the black ornamental panel and in Tamil and Telugu along the foot either side of the printer's rosette. This is the plate-Type 2 hundred, distinguished from Type 1 by the printed date being engraved as two digits with the remainder entered by hand. Retired from circulation with two bold black CANCELLED handstamps across the face; the reverse carries BANK OF MADRAS / ONE HUNDRED RUPEES in bold type with contemporary manuscript endorsements in Telugu and English. The NET grade reflects restoration rather than appearance - the note was split and has been reattached at the centre.
