Government of India, 100 Rupees, uniface, dated 16 February 1925, Madras, serial no. JE/53 78224, signed by H. Denning. J&R 2A.5.2E.3. The green-underprint uniface hundred: GOVERNMENT OF INDIA in a broad chain of engraved rosettes across the head, 100 RUPEES in ornamental medallions repeated down both side panels, the denomination in four vernacular script panels, the engraved promise 'Promise to pay the Bearer ON DEMAND the sum of ONE HUNDRED Rupees', the place and date rendered twice as '1925 Feb. 16 Madras 16 Feb. 1925', a large green 100 underprint at centre, and FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA above the signature of the Comptroller of Paper Currency; the reverse is plain, as issued. J&R records the prefixes JE and TE for the Denning Madras hundreds, and JE/53 sits in that block; the Madras attribution is reinforced by the printed office of issue in the date line and by the language panel Type 3 used for the Madras circle. Raw and ungraded, but a bright, clean example for a large-format uniface: crisp paper with a central vertical fold and a light ochre stain running down the centre of the reverse, no repairs.
