Reserve Bank of India, 5 Rupees, SPECIMEN, ND (1962-67), serial 00 000000, signed by P. C. Bhattacharya (Governor). J&R 6.3.5.1B, Pick 36b. The three-deer five: RESERVE BANK OF INDIA at the head with GUARANTEED BY THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT above, the Lion Capital of Ashoka in the right window, the promise to pay FIVE RUPEES / PAANCH RUPAYE at any office of issue, and GOVERNOR centre-aligned in the signature panel; the reverse carries RESERVE BANK OF INDIA in a single line above the vignette of three Sambar deer - two stags and a hind - with 5 in the left panel and the RBI palm-and-tiger seal at the right, over the language panel in eight scripts. Watermark: Ashoka Pillar with FIVE / RUPEES / RESERVE / BANK OF / INDIA in five lines. The type was first released on 6 February 1964; J&R separates it into two varieties by the inset letter carried in the watermark window, and this is the inset-B variety. A specimen rather than a circulating note: the serial blocks are filled with zeros and SPECIMEN is applied in red. Specimens of the Republic issues were prepared for record and reference and never released, so they survive in very small numbers.
